Happy Helpers for the Homeless

This weekend, my family and I volunteered with Happy Helpers for the Homeless, handing out food, clothing, and other goods to those in need in Baltimore. Happy Helpers has been serving the homeless and impoverished every single weekend for the past 22 years!! I had a great time supporting these people in a city that has been so troubled lately. I hope that the items and kindness given by Happy Helpers is beneficial to them and helps to meet their needs. Can’t wait to volunteer with Happy Helpers for the Homeless again!

Children’s Miracle Network – Miss America Day of Service

On Saturday, April 18, 2015 the Miss America Organization launched their inaugural day of service, Miss America Serves. Hosted by the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, this event was celebrated in every state across the nation with projects being led by MAO titleholders. My team and I were able to visit the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins to prepare brunch for the families staying at the house. I had the opportunity to meet a very special little guy who stole everyone’s heart! This was a great way to visit with the families, as well as raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network. I’m also so proud that my team contributed to Maryland’s 3rd place ranking out of the entire country for the amount of money raised on the Day of Service!!

Terps Against Hunger

The mission of Terps Against Hunger is to provide food for those in need and raise awareness about the scope of hunger in the DC Metro area. TAH packages convenient, nutritious, and non-perishable meals to distribute to local families experiencing hunger. I had a fun afternoon packaging these meals with my friends and I’m happy to have helped address the issue of hunger in the local community!

Cherry Blossom Festival

I had the opportunity to join thousands of parade participants and spectators for one of Washington, D.C.’s fondest traditions, the 2015 National Cherry Blossom Parade.

The Cherry Blossom Parade, in its 103rd year, is one of the Cherry Blossom Festival’s largest spectator events. The parade celebrates the 3,000 beautiful Cherry Blossom trees given as a gift to the people of Washington, D.C., from Tokyo in 1912. It showcases the blooming cherry blossoms and an array of marvelously designed floats, military personnel, marching bands, and performances of all kinds in a grand spectacle of music and showmanship. It was a beautiful day and a great experience meeting so many new people!

Children’s Miracle Network Terp Thon

I had a blast joining several friends at the University of Maryland Terp Thon! Terp Thon is a student organization that works year-round to raise money and awareness for Children’s National Health System while instilling the importance of service and philanthropic work among the University community. Students come together for the 12-hour Dance Marathon in support of the patients and families at Children’s National. I had so much fun dancing with my friends at the Dance Marathon and I was so moved by the children and families speaking at the event. I can’t wait for next year’s Terp Thon!

Be Your Best Self Summer Camp

I definitely felt like a kid today while I was working with the City of Westminster’s Department of Recreation and Parks summer youth camp. Spending time with youth and instilling confidence is a great way to be a role model!

Golf Tournament at Lakewood Golf Course

Spending the afternoon volunteering at the Lakewood Golf tournament was not only a great way to help raise money for their scholarship fund but I even got try my hand at golf. I learned a lot but think I may need a few more lessons in the future!

The Learning Tree’s Woody’s Song School

Spending the day at “The Learning Tree’s Woody’s Song School” was a highlight of my summer trip to Alabama! I had the amazing opportunity to spend the afternoon getting hands-on experience working with autistic children. They were truly inspirational and I experienced how much fun it can be learning and teaching in different environments. A young boy put such a smile  on my face and made me laugh when he looked at me and said; “Well helloooo, beautiful”!

In effort to build girls of courage, confidence and character, representatives of the Be Your Best Self Program and I  packed into the gym of the church’s Activity Center at Spring Hill Baptist Church and danced the night away to pop and rock music. In connection with Be Your Best Self Day,we had the chance to speak  to attendees about the importance of eating healthy, keeping good grades and living a balanced life. The mission of the program is to educate girls to become role models and show them the importance of having and reaching goals.

Daddy Daughter Dance

The American Legion sponsored a Daddy Daughter dance to benefit Dads Works of Carroll County. It gives me such pride to be able to attend events like these with my dad and speak with young girls about the importance of a relationship with their father. I also talked to the girls about setting personal goals in order to be the best version of yourself that you can be. We had a wonderful evening eating, dancing, and laughing together. Dads who create strong, positive connections with their daughters help prepare them for a successful adulthood!
